Using The Condensation Sensor For Safety

By Stephanie Perry

Technology continues to improve and be reduced in size. This provides great benefits in many different industries as the various types of systems can be incorporated into homes and vehicles. One example is the condensation sensor. This is something that has been included in clothes dryers for many years and makes them more efficient and safe. Rather than having to guess how long to dry clothes, the sensor measures the moisture and the clothes stop being heated when they are actually dry. This technology is now being included in modern vehicles to sense foggy windshields and rainy days.

A humidity monitor can be found in newer vehicles that help keep the windows from fogging up. This allows the driver to stop having to squint or constantly clean the inside of the glass while driving. Many accidents have happened because the driver couldn't see as they were heading to work. The system automatically detects the moisture before the window fogs up and adjusts the systems air to prevent it from doing so.

There is another device that detects when it is raining. The nice thing is that it can detect just droplets when the weather isn't so bad. As it detects this it will start up the windshield wipers and set the speed automatically based on how wet the window is getting. Most cars have the timed delay but this is a pain when you're in traffic and the amount of water keeps changing. When you speed up you have to adjust the timer again. With the detection device, it will adjust the speed based on the conditions without needing action from the driver.

Turning the rain meter on is simple. Using the car's dash menu, find your way to the wipers section. Within here is the setting to turn it on or off. When it is on, you can set your wiper handle to the automatic or A setting and let the vehicle handle what is needed. Setting your lights to the same automatic setting lets the rain meter turn on the front and rear running lights when it detects possible conditions where having the lights on would be a safer bet.

There are a couple of ways to turn it off. The first is to simply turn the knob from auto to whatever setting you want. This takes it out of the automatic mode and allows the driver to set the wipers to off or whatever speed he or she wants. The other way is to go back through the dashboard menu and turn it off under the wiper settings. Either way puts them back in traditional manual mode.

Replacing the glass requires a technician. If you are not familiar with the device, the technician will be able to detach them and put them back on the glass or in the vehicle as needed after the replacement is done. Some glass has them permanently attached, much like the heat strips for the back window.

Replacing them should be done by a mechanic. They will make sure they are the right ones for your particular vehicle and test them to be sure they work. If they do not match the car or are not installed properly, they will not work as designed.

Having these types of devices in the car can be lifesavers. The ability to keep the window clean and clear is critical to driving in bad weather. If your car doesn't come with them, you might consider having them installed aftermarket.
