Useful Information Regarding California Boat Storage

By Ronald Morgan

Boats come in a wide range of sizes, with some being small enough that they can be trailed from one location to another while others cannot. The advantage of small boats is that they are easy to store when winter comes. One can easily haul the vessel at the back of their SUV to their own backyard and have it stored. Here are facts regarding California boat storage.

This makes homes the most appropriate place to store boats of small sizes. However, one needs to get a professional boat moving service to tow large boats to their backyards in case one wants to store them home. Getting such services costs a lot of money. The money is enough to pay for moving the boat, winter storage, and launching the boat in a boatyard.

It is therefore required that large boats should be kept in a boatyard or marina to avoid unnecessary transportation. Haulage process involves a lot of risks to the vessel. The risks usually translate into huge insurance payments or out-of-the-pocket payments. During the start of spring season, one has to pay the haulage cost again for the boat to be moved back into the water.

It is not only the large cost of moving large vessels that makes it suitable to have them stored in marinas, boatyards and other nonresidential areas. One factor that makes nonresidential storage for large boats necessary is local zoning. Local zoning involves laws that prohibit large vessels from being stored residential properties. One may be charged heavily in a court of law if they break such laws, which are often passed by cities or towns. The consequences and challenges of storing boats in backyards are not worth the joy that comes with it.

The most common and possible alternative for storing boats is the traditional outdoor storage method. This is the only way of storing sailboats with their masts up. Ideally, this option is more popular because of the cost associated with it. It is cheap for both the boat owner and boatyards to store boats on empty lots during winter.

Outdoor storage also presents several other advantages. For instance, the owner of the vessel is free to visit their boat at any time they want without restrictions. One can simply walk into the lot to inspect the condition of their vessel whenever they want. Also, it is possible for one to carry out maintenance on the vessel while it is in storage.

This method has several disadvantages too. The common setback of outdoor storage is that the boat is exposed to weather elements. Often this setback makes it necessary to cover the vessel while it is being stored. Therefore, covers have to be bought separately by the owner. These covers are quite expensive but they can be reused and one has to buy them only once.

A support framework also has to be erected to hold the boat in place. Erecting the support framework can be difficult and one will have to hire a professional welder to make it. The bought is also prone to become dirty because of being stored outside and one will have to clean it regularly. Damage by vandals is also a problem for this kind of storage.
