By Brian Butler

If you love to go trout fishing, the next step is to learn how to go after big bones. Bonefishing Cat Island Bahamas is the most challenging, exciting and rewarding thing you will ever do. These fish are smart and very difficult to catch. More importantly, they aren't going to respond to the same techniques that you use when pursuing trout. Following are a few, helpful tips that will allow you to attract and catch some of the biggest and most intelligent fish that you've ever come across.

Fish don't seem like they have a keen sense of smell but bonefish certainly do. Before making any trip out onto the flats, pick up some loose rocks and sand off the ground and use it wash your hands. This will mask your odors and help you blend.

You also want to lay off of cigars and cigarettes, avoid cologne an use unscented soaps and lotions. The top forms of clothing to wear will be designed to camouflage you and conceal you within the natural elements. Never wear a brightly colored Hawaiian shirt in favor of a simple outfit with muted and earthy colors.

Always have a pair of wading boots when heading out to the flats. Even before you leave for your trip you should start breaking these boots in. This is the best way to prevent painful blisters. Bonefish can be easily spooked and you may find yourself wading for a very long time before actually spotting some action.

Because of their flashy metallic color, bones can sometimes blend right into their surroundings. When traveling with a guide, take careful direction from this professional. Trust in his or her ability to spot bones. Guides have the most experience and the greatest ability to see the fish that you cannot.

When bonefish feed, this is the perfect time to position your fly. You want to drop it almost right on their heads. Let your fly hit the bottom of the flat and then drag it through the sand in short, gentle popping motions. This will give it the appearance of a shrimp that is busy feeding so that it is far more likely to get picked up.

When you're on the flats, always be sure to keep loud noises to a minimum. Bonefish are very intelligent and this is a large part of the reason why they live to be so big. Whenever they suspect a problem in the area, they will immediately start swimming the other way. This is why it is important to avoid dropping things on the boat bottom or stomping around loudly while you are in the boat. Also, be cognizant of the fact that the wind is going to change directions regularly. This means that you are going to make casts according to the direction and speed of the wind. You can get the best results by standing in and away from the wind while practicing your casts at home.

Stealth is always your biggest ally when bonefishing. Be quiet and do your absolute best to blend in with the scenery. If you are able to sneak up on a fish and present your fly correctly, you will have a good chance of hauling a healthy sized bone in.
