Finding Cost Effective Guitar Repair

By Ann Stone

If you are a guitarist your instrument will need to be looked after and it may sometimes need repairing. Electric and acoustic instruments will require routine maintenance and working on them is a specialized job. When you are looking for affordable guitar repair there are various options available to you and some research should be done before you make any decisions.

Guitars are made from many different materials and they are sold in various designs and shapes. A lot of acoustic instruments are built with rare and exotic woods and the necks can be decorated with various type of inlay. Underneath the top of an acoustic guitar there is bracing and struts which sometimes needs to be fixed and the tops will sometimes require some cosmetic attention.

Electric instruments are more complicated than acoustic ones and there are a lot of electronics, pickups and wiring. The necks are usually constructed from timber such as rosewood or maple and will have a metal truss rod at the centre. Electric guitars should be set up properly for the player and this will need to be done by an experienced technician.

A great place to get your repair work carried out is a specialist guitar store which can be found in many neighborhoods. A large number of stores will have their own workshop and an in house technician. The people that work in these store can help and advise you and you are usually given a price for the work which you can compare with others before you commit to anything.

There are also a number of web based firms that can carry out instrument repair work. The web sites for the firms will list the various services that are available and you can contact them by telephone or email. You should be mindful that when you send your instrument away to get it repaired you will have to pay for shipping and you should ensure the package is insured.

It can also be worth contacting the factory that built your instrument especially if it is vintage or rare. Many vintage guitars command a high price and they need to be worked on by specialized technicians. You can call the factory before sending your instrument to discuss the repairs and the costs.

When your repair work is complete you need to keep the payment receipt for the job. Some work will be guaranteed and you will need receipts to get further work done under any warranties. Prior to paying the bill you should inspect the instrument and play it to make sure that everything is in order.

Some things can be done which will avoid costly repairs being required and that will keep your instrument in good condition. When you are not playing your instrument it should be in its case or on a stand. After each playing session always wipe the guitar with a cloth and have it inspected by a technician every so often to check for any problems.
