Choosing Replacement Harley Davidson Parts

By Barbara Reynolds

Most bike owners at some time will find it necessary to carry out repairs after a failure or modifications to personalize a model. There are a few things to take into account when looking for Harley Davidson parts and some care is needed when buying. Many of these items can be quite costly and a little time spent comparing prices can be beneficial.

Almost all parts are readily available even for older models and most can be purchased from official dealers or bike shops. Everything from the smallest components to complete exhaust systems and engines are stocked for the various models. When replacing an item due to failure it is always the better option to use an original part rather than an aftermarket one.

In addition to stores there are now thousands of online sellers who can supply owners with the items they need within a few days. At first glance these will often appear to be cheaper than in shops but postage costs will need to be added. Due to the fact that most courier firms will charge by weight it should be noted that large bulky items can be quite expensive to ship.

A large number of parts can also be found in junk yards and reused to make repairs or replace faulty components. This is often a more cost effective option but checks should be made to ensure that these are not faulty and fit for purpose. When using second hand parts it is a good idea to take the old one along to make sure it is the same as the one being purchased.

When buying new parts for customization of a motorbike there are infinite options and a good custom bike can be worth a lot more than a stock model. Additions such as a handmade seat, air brushed steel and engraved exhausts can improve the look of a model significantly. Hand stitched luggage and leather bags are also very popular among bikers to make their model a true one off.

When deciding to modify a motorbike with custom parts and accessories there are a few things to think about beforehand. Official biking clubs will sometimes prevent a model being shown for judging if it is not as it left the factory. Also when fitting additional components from other suppliers it should be noted that some warrantees may not be valid after these changes have been made.

When replacing items such as engines, brakes, suspension or exhausts it is worth seeking the advice of a mechanic. A qualified technician will be able to advise on where to buy from and how much to pay especially in the case of older models. If the work is being done by them they may choose to source the bits themselves and this is sometimes a safer bet.

It is always preferable to keep any old usable items after replacement ones have been fitted to the vehicle. If In the future the motorcycle is put up for sale or traded in for another model these items can be kept with the original bike. This is also important when selling a bike after it has been modified as some riders when buying may wish to return it to a factory specification model.
