Benefits Of Being A Member Of Pharmacy Law Society

By Janine Hughes

There is a myriad of laws that apply to the pharmaceutical industry and individuals working in it. Pharmacist-attorneys, wholesalers, pharmacists, manufacturers and other stakeholders have formed a pharmacy law society to lobby for their interests. This organization also includes students studying either law or pharmacy and would like to get acquainted with what is happening in this sector.

Some of the objectives of this group include creating awareness about the laws that touch on pharmaceutical care, pharmacists and pharmacies. The targeted membership includes manufacturers and distributors of drugs, medical devices and food supplies. Members have the advantage of access relevant information in an accurate and timely manner.

Membership to this non-profit making organization spreads to include suppliers of dietary and food supplements, medical devices, cosmeceuticals and hospital drugs. Officers charged with quality assurance as consultant or employees are also members. Students pursuing legal studies and pharmacy courses are members. There are attractive scholarships for them as long as they remain within the society.

The information available to members comes in the form of monthly updates on industry rules, legislation and regulation. There is a bimonthly publication detailing market trends for perusal by members. The information released by this organization is credible and useful at various levels.

An annual conference on the industry is part of the activities members are expected to participate. It contributes over fifteen points to your continuous education credits beyond offering the latest industry information. Members get front role tickets to the conference. It is an incredible way to remain ahead of your peers in the sector.

There are two classes of members. Holders of law or pharmacy degrees are in one category. This category also includes individuals with interests in the pharmaceutical sector. Their registration fee is pegged at 135 dollars. The other category comprises of students pursuing legal studies or courses in pharmaceutical related studies. This category is required to pay forty dollars for registration.

A board of directors runs the organization. It is made up of four officers and a fifth ex-official member who is their secretary. This group is made up of the immediate former president, current president, treasurer and president elect. They are joined by a group of four who are non-officers of the organization.

The group meets at least once a year with the venue and time being decided by the directors. A thirty days notice is issued to convene the meeting. It is the board that decides on the agenda in consultation with members. This means that a member may suggest an agenda for discussion.

The organization acts as an industry lobbyist to ensure that legislation does not oppress the industry. They also organize conferences on issues affecting the industry. Other membership benefits include expert witness and attorney referral services. Members have easier access to information through an online membership portal.

The organization acts as the link between stakeholders and other organizations in the sector. This is the platform that offers the latest information about the sector with regular updates via email. It acts as the voice of industry stakeholders on all matters affecting them.
