An Auto Upholstery Cleaning Primer

By Cornelius Nunev

There are all sorts of things that can get your vehicle's upholstery dirty, but truly only one that can wash it. That one thing is diligence. Here's how you can clean car upholstery in a diligent manner.

Keep away from doing things in car

Whenever you try to keep your vehicle clean, you need to keep away from doing anything other than driving in the vehicle. The vehicle needs your full attention, or you can take a break to get something such as food if you have to. This will keep your car much cleaner.

Fire up the vacuum

Just like you regularly vacuum your home, you need to regularly vacuum your car. Vacuum underneath all the mats and on top of them if they need it. Use the different parts to make sure you get all the nooks and crannies. This day-to-day maintenance is very important. It makes it harder for dirt to set in when the upholstery fibers are upright, which takes place whenever you vacuum.

It is totally worth forking out the cash to get certain stain repellents that will protect your upholstery. They are expensive, but they can guard your carpet. One great example is Scotchguard.

Cleaning leather

If you think it's a good idea to purchase Armor All or some other leather-cleaning product for your vehicle's upholstery, then you also most likely think that the only water secure to drink is Fiji. For washing leather, a damp towel is usually all that's necessary. Fully finished leather is already water resistant, so if you catch a spill easily, it may not seep through. If the stain is a bit more severe - such as ink or nail polish - you'll need leather cleaner and a soft sponge. Don't use goods that are not intended for leather only.

Cleaning other things

Specialty cleaners may also be essential for rubber and vinyl upholstery surfaces. Some home remedies will even work. With vinyl, try baking soda on a damp rag, followed by a rinse with dishwashing detergent and water. Considering that rubber and vinyl are even more susceptible to sun damage, an interior protectant can be a good investment.

Some upholstery-cleaning extras worth noting

Dilute coffee spills with cool water and blot. If the stain stays, soak with glass cleaner and blot dry after 5 minutes

If you are facing greasy stains, make sure you test the remedy in a small area and then use it. You can just put paint thinner and salt or cornmeal on the spot overnight. After the night is over, vacuum it clean

With salt or hairspray, you can get rid of stain from ink

To be able to dilute the acid in vomit, you can use club soda or baking soda and water

Mix laundry starch and cold water to cover blood. After letting it dry, you can vacuum it away

With alcohol spills, all you need is some cold water

Brighten fading carpet by first vacuuming, then sponging it lightly with clear ammonia and water. The mixture is a half-cup of ammonia to one pint of water. Note: Do not use ammonia on wool carpet

For those who have smelly carpet, you can use Borax. Let it sit for an hour and vacuum it up. Do this over again if you want to get rid of flea eggs and fleas

Static carpets could be rid with a fabric softener/water mixture. Just mix five parts water with one part softener

Hate carpet imprints? Put a damp towel over the spot, and press with an iron set to low heat. Do not let the iron sit, as synthetic fibers can melt

Want your vehicle mats to look good? Just use liquid shoe wax polish
