The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Service is where the criminal records of the state are kept and managed. This should be the first place to check when planning to obtain a copy of a criminal record in New York. In case where the document is not available at the said office, one can check with the county court house and see if they have the document you are interested in. Sending a mail request addressed to the state office is also allowed but the results of the search can take a while.

The government uses the Internet as a tool to deliver information to the public. The Internet has helped speed up the retrieval process. One can get the document even without leaving home and the results are delivered in just seconds instead of days. One good thing about doing the search online is that there are free criminal records free to public access available through websites that offer such services.
