6 Things You Need To Know Surrealist Artists MI

By Edward Phillips

Art is a vast subject that you cannot learn in a single day. For instance, not many people understand about surrealism, which is a cultural movement founded in the 1920s. This movement was widely known for its writings and visual artworks. The artistes painted illogical images but had a unique photographic precision. They imagined strange creatures and painted pictures that made one's imagination to wander. The upcoming surrealist artists MI has thus have to use the same principals as their founders. However, they must first learn some facts about surrealism.

Surrealism is built on wild imagination. It is mainly based on the subconscious as well as the conscious. However, the movement was greatly influenced by Dadaism, which was also another great movement. A dream specialist and a philosopher were artistes that influenced this movement. Therefore, surrealists adopted the model of thought of these people.

This movement also has Dadaistic roots. However, surrealism was different from Dadaism in the sense that surrealists were fascinated and inspired by town life. They loved and appreciated the urban way of living thus they expressed it in their artworks. Also, surrealism was based more on positivity while Dadaism was nihilistic and most of their expressions were negative.

At first, the surrealistic writers were reluctant to adopt visual art. They believed in the free expression of one's mind. They thus emphasized so much on automatic writing or automation. Their main fear was that if they adopted visual art, people would no longer write creatively. They thought that visual artistry would block their expression in writing.

This movement founded several techniques in visual artistry. One of the methods is called frottage. This involved placing a paper on a texture that is grained then rubbing it using crayons or pencils. Grattage is another technique that involves rubbing pigment on a canvas lying on top of another surface that is grained.

Surrealism was a highly political movement. This is because they became great followers of a poet who had radical political views. The poet, who was known as Andre Breton wished to influence people and flee them from all the rationalism that was in the society. The political views of the poet influenced the movement a great deal.

This movement was claimed to be sexists. The accusation was caused by the dressing code of the women. When the group took pictures, the female artistes were not depicted. Therefore, the photo was an all-men picture. This made some of the female artistes such as Leonora Carrington and Lee Miller to start experimenting with cross-dressing. More so, some members created artworks that depicted females as monstrous creatures. As a result, some women began portraying themselves as some mythical creatures or animals.

The surrealism movement, however, faced an enormous challenge during the 2nd World War. They all separated and ran to the US of America because of the fear of being persecuted. This did not affect their imagination. Their artworks have been carried on from century to century. Also, more and more artistes have a great interest in adopting this unique style.
