Methods Used To Accomplish Supply Chain Optimization

By Jennifer Wagner

The supply chain is a system comprising of people, information, activities, resources and organizations that take part in the conveyance of a good or service from the supplier to customer. To ensure supply chain optimization, the companies involved in this procedure must transform raw materials, natural resources and various other components into ready goods to be delivered to clients. Each element in the chain has a unique role to play during this transition.

Optimization of the supply chain is not a simple thing to accomplish, however. It requires that the person puts so many things into consideration. One will have to set several tools and processes into motion. These methods and tools should be aimed at optimizing distribution and manufacturing operations within the organization. This can be done through optimal placement of raw materials and reduction in costs incurred during daily activities. Major costs are incurred via processes such as production, transportation of goods and distribution to various point of purchase. Software based mathematical models are usually applied in trying to accomplish this fit.

Due to changes in the business community, the supply system has also had to evolve with time. For instance, a few decades back, the chain was an internal component of the organization. With the introduction of propagation of computer networking, modern technologies and internet tools, the series evolved into a complex external component comprising of an ecosystem of people, processes and machinery.

One of the means to survive in the industry is for one to think big and yet act within limited proportions. One should take some time to think strategically and plan for the various elements of the protocol. When it comes to procurement of goods and services, these managers should consider global opportunity and the overall needs of the firm. However, during the execution of various activities, the focus should be on local maximization of investment resources.

Self reliance is very crucial in business. However, it should not come at the cost of resource optimization. Many managers indulge company resources in so many activities. This minimizes external expenditure. However, it over stretches the available resources and limits the quality of output. To avoid such tendencies, one should focus on core company strengths and assign all other tasks to other contractors who have the necessary specialty.

Optimization of the supply also requires demand information based forecasting and inventory control. To achieve the latter, one must ensure improved collaboration between the different parties involved in this system. Cooperation between the producer or supplier and retailer is very paramount here. Enhanced collaboration promotes products availability, fulfillment rates and elimination of redundant elements.

Another useful technique is the use of mobile based technology. Technology is essential for successful business operations. It helps to improve activities such as marketing, field sales, merchandising and direct service provision. These companies can connect with customers directly by availing information on item contents, origin, provenance and sustainability among other things.

Another useful technique in supply management is to ensure that your mechanism is flexible. Having a flexible system makes it easier for the organization to respond to market and other forms of changes in the industry. These changes could be with the sales, repositioning of inventory and service level among other things.
