Understanding Sciatica.

Sciatica means discomfort in the hip and is commonly linked with the Sciatic nerve which is a bit of a celebrity among nerves in the body as it is the longest one and probably the most widely recognized.

What really causes Sciatica?

Most individuals with signs of Sciatica will have had lumbar region discomfort before they had Sciatica; there is no coincidence here as for most people the problem will originate there. The nerves that join together to form the Sciatic nerve really originate in the lower back. In addition to these nerves there additionally are plenty of muscles, ligaments, discs and spinal joints which can refer pain down the legs

Could it be something else?

In some some cases Sciatica like symptoms may be due to more significant conditions like Problems with arteries or some of the organs.

What's referred discomfort?

Here is where the brain confuses a pain signal from one area with another area. A common form of this problem is people with heart problems who feel pain in their jaw; the discomfort is coming from within the heart but the brain confuses it with agony from another area

How long will I have Sciatica?

It relies on the scale of your injury and other risk factors:

Reduced activity, heavy lifting, extended sitting with poor posture, extended sitting in soft chairs, smoking and prior injuries of the low back all increase the chances of getting sciatica and for suffering extended symptoms

What can I do to cure my Sciatica?

Manual therapists like Osteopaths, Physiotherapists and Chiropractic consultants continually treat patients with Sciatica. Acupuncture, Yoga and related exercise classes may also help. Pain killers can be productive at decreasing the discomfort but they won't address the underlying cause

Do the NHS treat Sciatica?

Sometimes NHS treatments for sciatica will include analgesics and exercises given by a physiotherapist providing it's not caused by something more worrying.
